Recently, the 7th China International Import Expo “Sports + Innovation” thematic seminar was held in Shanghai. During the event, Shanghai University of Sport, in collaboration with the International Society for Economics of Sport, released the “2024 Global Sports City Index” and “2024 China (Mainland) Sports City Index.” Among Chinese cities, three made it into the global top 50, with Beijing and Shanghai ranked 29th and 30th respectively. Hangzhou, a new entrant, ranked 48th. Notably, Shaoxing, which joined this year, secured a remarkable position in the top 20, ranking 19th.
The index evaluates the comprehensive development of global cities in sports across four dimensions: sports history and tradition, the influence of sporting events, media coverage, and the impact of professional sports. It provides scientific data support and decision-making references for global sports city development.
Among the newly ranked cities this year, Nantong, Dongguan, and Shaoxing, all of which have professional sports clubs, entered the top 20. All nine new cities made it into the top 30, reflecting the immense publicity and influence brought by high-level sports events and professional sports clubs.
As one of China’s first pilot cities for sports consumption and a national model for fitness, Shaoxing boasts rich sports culture resources and a strong atmosphere for public fitness.
Sports events are an important window to showcase a city’s image. Shaoxing has attracted significant attention both domestically and internationally by hosting major events such as the Asian Games, the World Women’s Volleyball Club Championship, and the National Baseball Championship Cup. These events have greatly enhanced the city’s visibility and reputation. The successful hosting of these large-scale events has established Shaoxing as a renowned venue for sports, further boosting its international influence.
On November 10, the 2024 Shaoxing Marathon kicked off. The event has been rated as an “Elite Label” event by the World Athletics and has also been recognized as a “National Sports Industry Demonstration Project.” The marathon serves as a platform to showcase Shaoxing’s city image and its economic and social development, marking the beginning of a new chapter in using sports to empower the city.
In addition, Shaoxing has strengthened its urban infrastructure and improved venue management. With five major Asian Games venues as key centers, the city has integrated “Sports + Parks,” public gyms, multifunctional sports fields, and other sports facilities, achieving an average of 3.15 square meters of sports space per person, ranking second in the province.
With the “City” rising, the famous city of Shaoxing is leveraging “Sports +” to continuously climb in the rankings.
